500g ground beef or lamb
1 onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup carrots, diced
1 cup peas (frozen or fresh)
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1 cup beef broth (or water)
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
Salt and pepper, to taste
2 tablespoons olive oil
For the mashed potatoes:
1 kg potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
50g butter
1/2 cup milk or cream
Salt and pepper, to taste
Grated cheese (optional, for the top)
Instructions:
- Prepare the mashed potatoes:
Boil the potatoes in salted water until they are tender.
Drain the water and mash the potatoes with butter and milk. Season with salt and pepper. Set aside.
- Cook the filling:
Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, and sauté until soft.
Add the ground meat and cook until browned.
Stir in the carrots, peas, and tomato paste. Cook for another 5 minutes.
Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Let the mixture simmer until it thickens slightly. Season with salt and pepper.
- Assemble the pie:
Preheat the oven to 200°C (390°F).
Spread the meat mixture evenly at the bottom of a baking dish.
Layer the mashed potatoes over the meat, smoothing the top.
(Optional) Sprinkle grated cheese on top of the mashed potatoes for extra flavor.
- Bake:
Place the dish in the oven and bake for about 20-25 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
- Serve:
Garnish with parsley if desired and serve hot.
